Challenge

The 1960s Ford Road Pump Station was failing to meet growing demands, with aging equipment, scarce replacement parts, and severe corrosion and infiltration risks. A modern, reliable upgrade was urgently needed to ensure long-term operation.

Results

ART applied OBIC’s concrete primer and Armor Lining System to create a seamless, waterproof, corrosion-resistant wet well. Completed in Summer 2023, the upgraded station is built for long-term durability, with OBIC systems expected to extend service life by 50+ years and backed by a 10-year warranty, providing lasting reliability and cost savings.

About Northwestern Water and Sewer District

Northwestern Water and Sewer District provides water and sewer services to residents and businesses in northwestern Ohio, ensuring reliable, safe, and sustainable infrastructure solutions.

The Challenge

The Northwestern Water and Sewer District was confronted with the urgent need to modernize critical wastewater infrastructure in Perrysburg Township. The existing Ford Road Pump Station, built in the 1960s, was approaching the end of its functional life and struggling to accommodate the area’s increased sanitary sewer capacity requirements. Maintenance was becoming increasingly difficult as original equipment required obsolete parts, leading to potential service disruptions. Compounding the challenge, the below-grade location subjected the facility’s concrete structures to the constant threat of hydrogen sulfide corrosion and groundwater infiltration, both leading causes of premature failure in wastewater systems. A forward-thinking solution was necessary to ensure long-term operational reliability, environmental compliance, and to support continued community growth.

The Solution

Recognizing the need for a durable, cost-effective, and technically advanced protection system for the new pump station, the district evaluated several rehabilitation and lining technologies. OBIC’s Armor Lining System and Concrete Primer stood out for their proven ability to deliver a seamless, monolithic, and waterproof membrane, effectively eliminating pathways for corrosive gases and groundwater. Advanced Rehabilitation Technology, an experienced OBIC installer, was selected to apply these products to the new wet well structure. The district’s decision prioritized long-term asset preservation, regulatory compliance, and minimized lifecycle maintenance costs, aligning with their commitment to provide robust infrastructure solutions for the community.

The Results

By deploying OBIC’s advanced lining technologies, the new Ford Road Pump Station now benefits from industry-leading protection against the most common and costly threats in municipal wastewater infrastructure corrosion and infiltration. The project, valued at $7M and completed in Summer 2023, features a structure measuring 22' x 22' x 50' and a pump capacity of 4,500 gallons per minute. The OBIC systems are engineered to extend the facility’s service life by 50 years or more and are backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty, providing substantial assurance to stakeholders. The outcome is a resilient, low-maintenance asset that supports the district’s mission of delivering reliable and sustainable water and sewer services to an expanding population.
